St. Louis-Style Pizza Recipe
Ingredients:
For the Dough:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2/3 cup water
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
For the Toppings:
- 1/2 cup pizza sauce
- 2 cups Provel cheese (or a mix of white cheddar, Swiss, and provolone)
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1/4 cup diced green bell pepper
- 1/4 cup diced onion
- 1/4 cup sliced mushrooms
- 1/4 cup sliced black olives
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Dough:
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
- Add the water and olive oil, and mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes, until it is smooth and elastic.
- Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for 15 minutes.
2. Preheat the Oven:
- Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C). If using a pizza stone, place it in the oven to heat up as well.
3. Shape the Dough:
- Divide the dough into two equal portions. Roll each portion into a thin, 12-inch circle on a floured surface.
- Transfer the dough to a pizza peel or a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
4. Assemble the Pizza:
- Spread a thin layer of pizza sauce over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
- Sprinkle the Provel cheese (or cheese mix) evenly over the sauce.
- Top with grated Parmesan cheese, diced green bell pepper, diced onion, sliced mushrooms, and sliced black olives.
- Sprinkle dried oregano and dried basil over the toppings and drizzle with olive oil.
5. Bake the Pizza:
- Transfer the pizza to the preheated oven (or onto the hot pizza stone) and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the crust is crisp and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
6. Serve:
- Remove the pizza from the oven, let it cool for a few minutes, slice into squares (traditional St. Louis-style), and serve hot.
Enjoy your authentic St. Louis-style pizza!
